PRAYER

The first exercise we need to do in order to strengthen our spiritual core is prayer. What is prayer? Prayer is a means of making known a wish, desire, want or need, to a higher power. It is making a request or petition for help for yourself or someone else. Many prayers are said out loud. The spoken word is very powerful. But God can also read our secret thoughts in our hearts (Romans 8:27).

Prayer is also the way we communicate with God. It is during these times that we build and strengthen our personal relationship with Him. Prayer shouldn’t only be done when we are in crisis mode but rather a practice that is done daily and is a part of our routine. God wants to have conversations with us. He says ‘come let us reason together’ (Isaiah 1:18) He is our heavenly Father after all. Consider if, in a family the members never converse with each other. They never ask about each other’s day; never express their feelings. These are the conversations that let people into each other’s lives and bond them close together. It provides avenues for us to help each other. What kind of family would it be if the members kept to themselves? You come in; go to sleep, wake up, eat and leave. No exchange of thoughts. That’s not a relationship. God wants to hear from us, not only read our thoughts from afar. He wants to get close. In getting close to God, we will also learn how to attune our ears to hear from Him. Because remember prayer is a two-way conversation. We are urged to listen as well as speak. If we are quiet, we will hear Him speak.
