SIMPLE OBEDIENCE

The third thing we need to do in an effort to build our spiritual core is practise Simple Obedience. What do we mean by this term? It means exactly what it says, simply obeying and following the advice and instructions of God no matter how silly, ridiculous or troublesome they may be. Whenever I think about this term, I am reminded of the story of Joshua and the Jericho walls, in Joshua 6:1-27. Joshua and the nation of Israel were at Jericho, one of their major obstacles in acquiring the land of Canaan. Jericho had built a wall presumed to be impenetrable. God therefore instructed Joshua in the most unusual way on how Israel would gain victory over Jericho. God told Joshua to have the Israelites march around the city once a day for six straight days. While marching, the soldiers were to play their trumpets and the priest to carry the Ark of the Covenant around the city wall. However, on the 7th day the Israelites were told to march around the city walls of Jericho 7 times and on the 7th march, the people were to blow their trumpets and give a loud SHOUT

They did just this and after the people shouted the mighty walls of Jericho collapsed. Now scientists have studied and presented arguments that the type of soil present at the time at Jericho could have attributed to the collapse of the wall, as it was put under pressure by the marching of the Israelites. Now at the time, I know it may have seemed foolish to some to be marching around an ‘impenetrable wall’ for seven days. But Joshua did it anyways. He simply obeyed. How many times in our lives are we called to do something and eventually shun away from it because we feel as though it's stupid or may be embarrassed by what others may think. In guarding our hearts, in aligning our lives to the will of God, we must learn how to be simply be obedient.
